The ABCs of Strings Overview

Developed by experienced teacher and performer Janice Tucker Rhoda, The ABCs of Strings is a wonderful series of string method books that's fun and educational for both children and adults.

Each series for Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass starts with a book for the absolute beginner and uses a repertoire of classical, folk, fiddle and original melodies along with warm-ups, study pieces, scales, duets, a glossary, a practice chart and a worksheet for note identification. There are simple graphs showing left-hand finger placement throughout all of the books of each series.

The ABCs of Strings, designed with student and teacher in mind, is compatible with current and classic methods. Throughout the series, new concepts, no matter how tricky or challenging, are introduced in an easy-to-learn manner that is enjoyable for student, teacher and even parents.

Students advance gradually, logically and thoroughly to playing proficiently in a way that makes learning a stringed instrument easy and fun! They develop a solid foundation in the beginning, and will be able to play well for years to come.

You may learn more about Janice Tucker Rhoda's method of teaching on The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner DVD. The DVD, CD and The ABCs of Duets complement violin book one, The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner. In addition, every method book has its own companion book of easy piano accompaniments to help facilitate study and recital performance. The ABCs of String Orchestra is a great way to begin orchestral playing.

Special Message and Photos for the Adult Beginner

In the preface of violin book one, The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner, author Janice Tucker Rhoda writes: "To the adult student: I am convinced it is never too late to begin studying the violin. In fact, adult beginners learn to read music at a very quick pace, have excellent concentration and are highly motivated to practice. Playing the violin is very engaging and the contents of this book will surely keep your continued interest."

There are many classical and popular melodies, as well as fiddle tunes to play throughout the entire series of five violin books. The additional warm-ups, scales, duets and glossary in book one will help further develop your skill and knowledge as an adult student while giving you a solid foundation.
